SmackDown! vs. RAW Match - Batista (SmackDown!) vs. Umaga (RAW)

WWE News - Post-WrestleMania News

Top RAW Star To SmackDown, Post-WM24 Storylines

-- As of last week, WWE has plans to move Umaga to the SmackDown.

-- Big Show was told that he was staying heel after WrestleMania to work a title program with Undertaker on SmackDown. Another storyline idea being tossed around is a Big Show vs. Great Khali program, although that probably won't be taking place until later in the year.

All 3 Brands Will Be At RAW, WWE Draft News

-- WrestlingObserver.com reports that all wrestlers from Smackdown and ECW were informed today that they are required to appear at Monday's RAW. This didn't sit well with some of the Smackdown and ECW wrestlers who were hoping to have a day off in Orlando on Monday.

-- The current plan is for WWE to hold the 2008 Draft Lottery on the April 21st three-hour RAW special. With all 3 brands appearing on RAW tonight, there is speculation that we'll get some preliminary draft information tonight.

Big Red champion

ORLANDO, Fla. — While Kane is revered for a combination of size, strength and agility that has allowed him to dominate WWE rings for the past decade, his in-ring strategy is often overlooked. But a brilliant plan is exactly what the Big Red Machine used to defeat Chavo Guerrero and walk out of WrestleMania XXIV as the new ECW Champion.

In his defense, Guerrero didn’t have much time to prepare for his match against the Big Red Machine. Kane earned an opportunity at the championship earlier in the evening by defeating 23 other Superstars in a hard-fought Battle Royal. Upon finding out Kane would be his opponent, the self-proclaimed “Mexican Warrior” may have spent the brief time between matches trying to figure out how to combat Kane’s raw power and brutal strength — or devising an underhanded way to hold onto his championship. What he didn’t prepare for was a sneak attack.

After entering the ring, Guerrero was greeted by the fiery blaze of Kane’s pyro. But instead of making his usual entrance through hellfire and brimstone, the Big Red Machine appeared from under the ring and took the ECW Champion completely by surprise. Before Guerrero even had a chance to react to the 7-foot monster, he was hit with a thunderous chokeslam and pinned. Guerrero never saw it coming. In a matter of seconds, Kane was declared the winner, adding a new championship to his collection.

Of course, it can be argued that Guerrero was given a taste of his own medicine. The Guerrero family has always prided itself on brilliant in-ring strategy, and two months earlier, Guerrero had taken advantage of interference from Edge in order to defeat CM Punk for the ECW Championship. What can’t be argued is that Guerrero will be dead set on getting a rematch against Kane and regaining the gold. Now that he’s champion, Kane will not only have to deal with an angry Guerrero, but giants like The Great Khali and Mark Henry who are hungry for the title. Kane’s reign won’t be an easy one, but the Big Red Machine wouldn’t settle for anything less.

Sweet Sixteen

March 30, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. – An unforgettable night at WrestleMania XXIV concluded in a glorious darkness illuminated by brilliant fireworks on Sunday, as the grim grip of sports-entertainment’s one and only Phenom once again clutched the World Heavyweight Championship.

The fall of the Rated-R Superstar not only commences Undertaker’s sixth World Title reign, but also fulfills the simple prophecy of The Deadman’s venerable undefeated streak on The Grandest Stage of Them All: It will endure.

The epic main event battle for the gold took place with the stark nightfall that eclipsed the sold-out Citrus Bowl – the open-air setting of WrestleMania XXIV. Known for making countless eerie, goose bump-inducing approaches to the ring – including everything from ravens to urn bearers – The Phenom made what was certainly the biggest entrance of his 16 WrestleMania appearances. The challenger was preceded by 10 torch-bearing druids and greeted by searing flames that reached more than 40 feet above the vast stage.

Soon after, the waning ominous, blue-hued light lifted for the forthcoming champion. Strangely appearing without his loyal miscreants, Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder, Edge was joined by his fiancée, SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero. After a long kiss goodbye at the top of the entranceway, the Ultimate Opportunist walked a long path toward his destiny against the most iconic figure in sports-entertainment history.

For weeks, The Phenom tried to get his cold hands on the evasive, yet strategic, Rated-R Superstar. Edge spent his Road to WrestleMania attempting to perturb Undertaker’s absolute focus on snaring the World Heavyweight Title, but on Sunday night, the Ultimate Opportunist’s plan proved futile.

The champion did his best to combat the very trepidation that has crept into the hearts of even the most steadfast contenders to The Deadman in the past at ’Mania. As confident and intent as Edge was on ending Undertaker’s fabled and feared winning streak, this night would mark the Rated-R Superstar’s final evening as champion. Nonetheless, despite his loss on The Grandest Stage of Them All, Edge – opportunist or not – still proved many of his disbelievers wrong by taking a top caliber fight to WWE’s greatest legend.

During the contest, The Phenom delivered a relentless torrent of his signature moves, weakening his resistant rival. Edge, too, retaliated with just about every vicious hold and attack he could possibly muster. Clearly well-schooled and self-educated in the challenger’s stratagem, the Rated-R Superstar reversed key maneuvers and even kicked out of several pinfall attempts after Undertaker landed a number of typically deal-closing moves – including the Last Ride and even the Tombstone Piledriver.

Following critical shifts in momentum and an attempt at his own Tombstone, the defending World Champion found some support from his Rated-R entourage. The Deadman managed to lay waste to Hawkins & Ryder, but the Ultimate Opportunist found the ideal moment to execute a spear – much like he did almost one year ago when he used the Money in the Bank contract to defeat a battle-worn Undertaker. But, one wasn’t enough to put away The Phenom and Edge was forced to plant a second one on his foe.

Suddenly, the twice-speared Undertaker locked in his mysterious submission hold and the Rated-R Superstar could only fight so much before tapping out with his last few breaths. A new World Heavyweight Champion was crowned and the lore of The Deadman’s streak claimed one more victim.

Now an astounding 16-0 at WrestleMania, Undertaker successfully reaped the soul of the Rated-R Superstar, and more importantly, cinched the highly coveted symbol of in-ring supremacy in the World Heavyweight Championship.

One-Man Dynasty Indeed?
By: Bryan Robinson
March 30, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. – Before some 70,000 stunned fans who were convinced that either John Cena or Triple H would walk away with the gold, Randy Orton proved tonight that reports of his demise as WWE Champion at WrestleMania XXIV were premature.

A wave of boos and a spattering of middle fingers greeted Orton as he held the WWE Title high for everyone in the Citrus Bowl and millions of pay-per-view watchers worldwide to see. “I told you so,” Orton seemed to be saying as he celebrated his victory. Many critics seemed to believe that it was a foregone conclusion that the Legend Killer’s five-month reign as WWE Champion would end at WrestleMania XXIV. And the arrogant Orton was keenly aware of this – and that’s why he reveled in his own special WrestleMania moment as a despondent Triple H and Cena looked on incredulously.

Seeds of a Dynasty
Ever since he won the WWE Championship, Randy Orton has been telling every and anyone who would listen that he is a “One-Man Dynasty.” Since October, he had shown he would do absolutely anything to keep the WWE Championship – no one, no relative was safe and nothing was over the line for Orton in his quest to keep the gold. The Legend Killer had emerged as a force atop the WWE mountain and turned back the challenges of elite contenders such as Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho and Jeff Hardy.

But as sadistic and egotistical as the third-generation Superstar is, he is also a proud champion. Tonight was the first time he headlined WrestleMania as champion and he was determined to prove a point. He was also annoyed that so many fans and critics anointed Cena and The Game as the next WWE Champion at WrestleMania.

In the weeks leading up to WrestleMania XXIV, Orton even made it a point to stun his two opponents on separate occasions with sudden RKOs when he believed they had forgotten about him and were too focused on each other. Orton saw Cena and Triple H as two nuisances, gnats that were always flying around his title and would never let him bask in his greatness. By eliminating by Triple H and Cena on The Grandest Stage of Them All, he believed he would prove once and for all that he is a “One-Man Dynasty.”

Three-Way Quest for Redemption
And tonight, Orton went a long way towards legitimizing his dynasty claims, but not without a fight from both Cena and Triple H. These three warriors are as different as anyone can be, but they share a common passion for the Holy Grail of sports-entertainment. And like Orton, Cena and The Game felt like they had something to prove.

Cena wanted to reclaim the title he never lost. Thanks to Orton, he was injured last October and had to relinquish the WWE Championship. Cena had to watch as the Legend Killer put a vise grip on the gold. Cena’s torn pectorial muscle was supposed to keep him out of WrestleMania, but he couldn’t sit on the sidelines and watch someone else hold his title. He decided to risk it all for an opportunity to reclaim the gold at WrestleMania XXIV.

Triple H’s odyssey to WrestleMania XXIV was full of twists, turns and potholes. Sure, he had headlined WrestleMania several times before, but this year was different. He saw WrestleMania XXIV as a chance at redemption. Last year, he missed WrestleMania due to injury. His 11th title reign was cut way too short by Orton, his former friend and Evolution teammate. And The Cerebral Assassin was haunted by Cena, a man he had never defeated. He still remembered tapping out to Cena’s STFU at WrestleMania 22. Cena also prevented The Game from winning this year’s Royal Rumble.

Triple H was proud that he overcame all sorts of obstacles, gauntlets and five opponents in the Elimination Chamber at No Way Out to make it back to The Grandest Stage of Them All. But he wasn’t going to feel complete unless he left the Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship with the gold. Triple H lives to be WWE Champion. He wanted – needed – to show the world at WrestleMania XXIV that he truly was The King of Kings and back on top of his Game.

A Cerebral Legend Killer: 'I Told You So'
Unfortunately for Cena and Triple H, their dreams of redemption at WrestleMania were just that – dreams. The Triple Threat Match was a war where the tide shifted several times between Cena, Orton and Triple H. Weeks of one-upmanship and mind games came to a physical head tonight as all three warriors showed they would do anything – and use any weapon – to win the gold.

However, in the end, brains turned out to be the deciding factor over brawn. Orton showed that he had indeed learned his lessons well from The Cerebral Assassin in their Evolution days. After watching The Game crush Cena with a Pedigree, Orton disposed of an unsuspecting Triple H with a punt to the skull and covered the vulnerable West Newbury, Mass. native for the stunning three-count.

So, The Champ is still here … but it’s not Cena. To the chagrin of Cena, Triple H, many of our fans and the locker room, Randy Orton is still the WWE Champion. And believe us, the self-proclaimed One-Man Dynasty loves to say, “I told you so.” There really will be no living with him now.

Animalistic bulldozing
By: Michael Dinan
March 30, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. – Before tonight, Umaga’s inscrutable rants reflected the savagery of his own manic destruction in the ring. A powerful, sadistic and deceptively quick warrior who had rarely been pinned down and was never truly dominated in the ring, the Samoan Bulldozer spoke more directly with his tattooed body. He let out primitive screams and unleashed a brutality that struck fear in his fellow WWE Superstars and assured Raw GM William Regal that his brand would come out victorious in battle for show supremacy with SmackDown’s Batista at WrestleMania XXIV.

That was before tonight. Now here’s a word Umaga may not want to get used to, courtesy of Batista: “Manhandled.”

In a stunning battle for brand bragging rights between two of WWE’s most ferocious Superstars, The Animal dropped Umaga with a devastating Batista Bomb before 70,000 screaming fans at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. The Batista Bomb on Umaga stunned onlookers, who had never seen the Samoan monster manhandled like that in his two years in WWE. The Animal’s impressive victory gave bragging rights to SmackDown’s fans and Superstars, long annoyed by Raw’s flagship status within WWE.

After nearly pinning Batista twice on the strength of nerve holds early in the match, momentum shifted swiftly and irretrievably for Umaga. With his back to a seemingly dazed Batista, the Samoan Bulldozer played to the ecstatic crowd and signaled for his signature Samoan Spike. But The Animal held off the deadly finishing move and swiftly countered with a spine buster and clinching Batista Bomb.

Could Batista’s thrashing of Umaga be the sign of renewed focus and determination in The Animal? It’s no secret that Batista wants to hold the World Heavyweight Championship again and perhaps his victory could persuade SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero, who had had difficulties in the past because of his rivalry with her lover, Edge.

Though hesitant at first, Guerrero one month ago granted Batista’s request to face the 348-pound Umaga in the high-profile match at WrestleMania. Batista never underestimated the Samoan Bulldozer, assailing Umaga until the Raw monster ran out of gas.

It isn’t clear where Batista’s convincing victory will take him next. But one thing is certain: He unleashed an Animalistic fury on Umaga tonight that he will never forget and has put WWE on notice.

WWE WrestleMania XXIV: CM Punk wins 'Money in the Bank' match

Perseverance makes Punk ‘Mr. Money’ in Orlando
By: Corey Clayton
March 30, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Straightedge Superstar shot straight to the top of the championship ranks Sunday night, thanks to his latest acquisition.

Former ECW Champion CM Punk fended off Chris Jericho on top of a 15-foot-high ladder to claim the Money in the Bank briefcase at WrestleMania XXIV. The victory over a talented field of six other Superstars gives Punk the opportunity to immediately challenge for any of WWE’s three major championships – anytime, anyplace.

But what was more shocking than Punk’s victory was the return of Montel Vontavious Porter’s most persistent rival, Matt Hardy.

Fully recovered from a ruptured appendix suffered late last year, Hardy rushed to ringside to thwart the United States Champion’s chance to claim the briefcase, knocking down SmackDown’s king of bling with a Twist of Fate off the ladder as the Citrus Bowl crowd roared.

Sources tell WWE.com that MVP was irate in the locker room, knowing now that the No. 1 threat to his U.S. Title is back and gunning for him.

After Punk's win in this human destruction derby, all of WWE’s champions will have to watch their backs and keep their guards up. But as last year’s winner, Mr. Kennedy, found out last year, “Mr. Money in the Bank” is a target for all those in the locker room who seek a taste of that king-making power.

But for one immortal night in Orlando, CM Punk is “money.” And our fans worldwide know it.

WWE WrestleMania XXIV: The Undertaker vs. Edge (c) for the World Heavyweight Championship (SmackDown!)

World Heavyweight Champion Edge vs. Undertaker
March 30, 2008

A telltale hour for the World Heavyweight Championship at No Way Out foretold the SmackDown main event at WrestleMania XXIV: The Rated-R Superstar vs. The Phenom, title vs. streak.

Within sixty minutes of witnessing The Phenom’s triumph in a grisly Elimination Chamber Match, the Ultimate Opportunist capitalized on an injured Rey Mysterio to retain the gold with an ample WrestleMania-based knot in his Rated-R gut.

The Deadman has pursued the World Heavyweight Title since May 8, 2007 – an evening on which infamy was defined by Edge’s opportunistic championship seizure. That night, the Ultimate Opportunist moniker was born as Edge cashed in Money in the Bank (which he craftily seized from Mr. Kennedy) at the most inopportune moment for Undertaker.

Minutes after The Phenom’s Steel Cage encounter with Batista and a savage assault by Mark Henry, the Rated-R Superstar stole the gold from the war-torn Deadman. The Ultimate Opportunist continued to be a bane to Undertaker for months on SmackDown, keeping the grim Superstar from reclaiming the championship. Now, nearly one year later, life proves to be ironically cyclical for Edge, as his date with the devil has been inked for WrestleMania.

Speaking of cycles, The Phenom is certainly reaching the peak of another for himself. This time last year, SmackDown’s resident demon pursued a quest toward a championship encounter with Batista at WrestleMania 23. In an epic clash of two indelible titans, The Phenom maintained his venerable win streak on The Grandest Stage of Them All, and more importantly, captured his fifth World Title.

This impressive 15-0 undefeated streak at WrestleMania casts an ominous, intimidating shadow over the Ultimate Opportunist’s reign. However, Edge himself bears his own notable record at WrestleMania (5-1), at which he has never been pinned or forced to submit. But, this imminent collision isn’t about streaks; it’s about the highly coveted World Heavyweight Championship.

Can even the most ideal opportunity keep the gold around the Rated-R Superstar’s waist at WrestleMania XXIV? Or will the Ultimate Opportunist find the angle he needs and make history by burying The Deadman once and for all as The Granddaddy of Them All emanates from the Florida Citrus Bowl?

WWE Friday Night SmackDown! - Main Event Results (3-28-08)

WWE SmackDown!'s very own, The Undertaker

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – In a morbid mock funeral, World Heavyweight Champion Edge presented “The Burial of Undertaker’s WrestleMania Undefeated Streak” on Friday Night SmackDown.

Sporting a dark gray suit, Edge and his cohorts
Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder – both dressed in black – joined SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero, also dressed in black, along with Assistant GM Theodore Long, for a pre-celebration of Edge’s self-predicted victory over Undertaker this Sunday at WrestleMania XXIV. (Full Preview)

The ring was adorned with black wreaths, purple and black flowers, a pulpit, black carpet, and a giant Undertaker photo – much different than when Edge proposed to Vickie Guerrero in a ring full of bright flowers on a Valentine’s Day edition of SmackDown. And instead of celebrating a new life, the Rated-R Superstar was out to relish in the death of Undertaker’s 15-0 WrestleMania record.

After reading a list of some of The Phenom’s ‘Mania victories – including against the likes of Jimmy Snuka, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, King Kong Bundy, Triple H, Ric Flair, Kane, Randy Orton, Mark Henry and Batista – Edge claimed he would bury The Phenom’s streak this Sunday. Vickie backed up her man by running a video showcasing her champion fiancĂ© – one of few Superstars who can boast to having never lost to Undertaker.

To end the service, Edge read the final rites: “Now it’s time to bid farewell to Undertaker’s undefeated streak and The Undertaker once and for all. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” Reveling in the moment, Edge then lifted Vickie’s black veil and the two embraced in a passionate kiss. But just when things got hot and heavy, Undertaker’s infamous gong was heard and the arena lights went out.

Hawkins & Ryder immediately stationed themselves outside the ring in a defensive posture to protect against the approaching Phenom. The champion held his ground at the edge of the ropes within the ring.

But, Undertaker crashed the macabre celebration by emerging from the coffin right in the middle of the ring. First he went after Edge’s approaching defenders, knocking both from the apron back onto the floor. Next, The Phenom grabbed hold of Edge, hoisted him in the air and slammed him into the open coffin.

Then it was Guerrero’s turn. The Deadman keyed in on her with a deadly stare from across the ring. The gaze evoked screams of fright from the GM -- the fear so real, it somehow enabled the wheelchair-bound GM to leap to her feet and run screaming from the ring and arena. Luckily, she escaped.

Hawkins & Ryder weren’t so lucky. After coming back into the ring, both ended up on the receiving end of crippling Tombstones from The Phenom. During the fray, the Ultimate Opportunist saw his chance to escape and hightailed it out of the ring.

This Sunday, there will be no escaping when the World Heavyweight Championship is on the line. Will The Phenom rise again and bring his record to 16-0? Or, will the Ultimate Opportunist find a way to retain his title, and at the same time end Undertaker’s undefeated WrestleMania streak? All the speculation will

CBS Jumps Through Hoops for Friday Split
NBC wins night overall with 'Dateline NBC' performance

Fast National ratings for Friday, March 28, 2008 (USA).

The second night of Sweet 16 action in the NCAA Tournament helped CBS to a demo win, but NBC earned a narrow overall win thanks to a two-hour "Dateline NBC."

Overall, NBC averaged a 5.8/10, nipping the 5.7/10 for CBS' all-basketball lineup. ABC was third with a 3.7/7, while FOX was fourth with a 3.3/6. The CW was fifth with a 2.4/4.

CBS won among adults 18-49, doing a 3.1 rating in the all-important demo. NBC's 2.6 rating was enough for second, followed by the 1.7 rating for ABC and FOX's 1.3 rating. The CW was right behind with a 1.2 rating.

The NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals (Sweet 16 to fans) put CBS in first for the 8 p.m. hour with a 6.0/11. NBC was second with the 3.5/7 for "Amne$ia," which was just better than a "Bones" repeat on FOX and a "Grey's Anatomy" repeat on ABC. The CW's "WWE Friday Night SmackDown!" had a 2.4/4 for fifth.

CBS stayed in first in the 9 p.m. hour with another 6.0/10 for basketball. "Dateline NBC" brought its network up to a 5.7/10. On ABC, "20/20" had a 4.0/7, while the time period premiere of "Canterbury's Law" had a 3.3/6, better than FOX's usual numbers for Friday night originals (but not better than FOX's usual numbers for Friday night repeats of "House"). The CW's wrestling was fifth.

NBC grabbed first at 10 p.m. with the 8.2/15 for "Dateline." The last moments of CBS' basketball were second, followed by the 4.2/8 for "20/20" on ABC.

Hopes and dreams
March 28, 2008

On what will be the final edition of Friday Night SmackDown before WrestleMania XXIV, emotions will be high, adrenaline will be flowing and last-minute strategies will be formulated. With The Granddaddy of Them All just two days away, some Superstar dreams will be realized, while others will be crushed.

This Friday, all eyes will be on Undertaker and World Heavyweight Champion Edge, as they prepare to defend their respective streaks at WrestleMania. For Undertaker, it’s a 15-0 unbeaten WrestleMania record. For Edge, it’s never having lost to Undertaker. As first announced last weekend in a WWE Mobile on AT&T exclusive video, Edge plans to celebrate the end of Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak this Friday on SmackDown. WWE.com has learned Edge and his cohorts are planning a macabre burial service. Will this grim celebration be premature, or will it prove to be a bold prediction of things to come in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday night?

Last week on SmackDown, United States Champion MVP clashed – verbally and physically – with Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho inside the VIP Lounge. In the end, Jericho got the upper hand on his Money in the Bank adversary by knocking MVP from atop a ladder in the ring. The two will meet again this Friday, "Champion vs. Champion," just 48 hours before they battle on the WrestleMania stage. Will MVP claim victory once again over Y2J, like he did in a tag team match Monday night on Raw?

With Batista set to face Umaga in the SmackDown vs. Raw Battle for Brand Supremacy at WrestleMania, Raw General Manager William Regal will be sending a Raw Superstar to SmackDown this week to give the Animal one final test. Who will Regal choose for this mission?

WrestleMania will also have implications on ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero’s title. The winner of the 24-Man WrestleMania Battle Royal will earn the opportunity to face the champion in a title match. SmackDown Superstars Kane, Mark Henry, Chuck Palumbo, The Great Khali and Jamie Noble among others will all be included in this 24-man over-the-top rope war. Last week on SmackDown, Henry destroyed Kane, Khali and Palumbo. This Friday, will one of SmackDown’s big men be out for revenge before they all do battle at 'Mania?

Also this Friday, the Diva Competition heats up even further as one more Diva will be eliminated according to your votes, and we move one step closer to finding out who will win a custom Beverly Hills Chopper. To vote, text your favorite Diva’s name to 44993.

We all know that Marimar finished its run as a TV Show but another phenomenon is to hit The Philippine Archipelago, I am not talking about Joaquin Bordado or Kamandag, I am talking about Pinoy Idol.

American Idol is the singing sensation in the U.S. and it is the #1 TV Show since 2005 and still undisputed for the top spot. An average of 26 million viewers tune in to Tuesday and Wednesday on FOX.

Now back to Pinoy Idol, this reality show can be a high-rater that breaks broadcast records and it can make GMA Network's streak to continue.

But it can also be normal rater and a hit because many singing contest shows aired in the year 2000s in the Philippines before and not even one of them stayed in the air for at least 7 years.

Tonight on The CW and NBC (3/27/08)

'American Idol' Results in FOX Wednesday Win
Minimal resistance from other networks on the night

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, March 26, 2008 (USA)

FOX once again ruled the airwaves Wednesday, riding "American Idol" to an easy ratings win.

FOX's 10.8 rating/18 share in primetime more than doubled the audience for second-place NBC, which drew a 4.9/9. CBS finished third at 4.5/7, followed by ABC at 4.1/7. The CW finished with a 1.9/3.

Among the adults 18-49 that advertisers chase, FOX's 6.8 rating was far and away the night's best. ABC took second with a 2.0, and CBS and NBC tied for third at 1.8. The CW earned a 1.2.

"The Moment of Truth," 6.5/11, put FOX on top at 8 p.m. A "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" rerun, 4.6/8, came in second for NBC. ABC's "Wife Swap," 4.4/7, beat CBS' "Big Brother" for third, and "America's Next Top Model" delivered a 2.5/4 for The CW.

The "American Idol" results show scored a 15.1/24 for FOX at 9 p.m. CBS moved into second with a "Criminal Minds" rerun, 4.7/7, which beat out a second "Criminal Intent," 4.3/7, on NBC. ABC's "Supernanny" earned a 4.0/7. The CW aired a repeat of Monday's "Girlicious."

NBC took over at 10 p.m. with "Law & Order," 5.7/10. "CSI: NY" drew a 4.9/8 for CBS, good enough to beat the 4.0/7 for "Men in Trees" on ABC.

International Television: ABC Family's "Greek" hits series high

'Greek' Return Scores High for ABC Family
Series high of 1.4 million hit on Monday

Never before have young women been so happy to return to Cyprus-Rhodes University.

The return of the freshman season of ABC Family's "Greek" on Monday (March 24) scored the network its best ratings ever for an original series in adults 18-34 and women 18-34. It gained triple-digit increases in time period levels in the target demos from the previous year, a whopping 289 percent in adults 18-34, and hit a high of 1.4 million total viewers for the series.

Scott Michael Foster, "Greek"

Other series highs include the following key demos: adults 18-49 (860,000), women 18-49 (544,000), viewers 12-34 (1.1 million) and females 12-34 (718,000).

The hourlong became cable's most-watched program in women 18-34 (473,000) and females 12-34 (718,000) in that hour, and held a steady second place in adults 18-34 and viewers 12-34.

The show's second half of the season also built on its premiere audience, doubling in the women 18-34 demo and improving by 27 percent in total viewers, 74 percent in adults 18-34, 58 percent in adults 18-49 and 50 percent in viewers 12-34.

For the time period, "Greek" also earned triple-digit increases for the time period over a year ago, up 169 percent in adults 18-49 and 148 percent in viewers 12-34. Also compared to the time period last year, the show's total viewers improved by a significant 40 percent.

On the debut of the second half of the first season, Rusty (Jacob Zachar) is trying to get over the betrayal of his ex Jen K. (Jessica Rose), while his sister Casey (Spencer Grammer) deals with being single and handling the new Zeta Beta Zeta sorority board overseer. Meanwhile, Cappie (Scott M. Foster) is coming to terms with his uncertain relationship with Rebecca Logan (Dilshad Vadsaria), and Calvin (Paul James) forgives Ashleigh (Amber Stevens) for accidentally outing him the previous semester.

International Television: "Dancing With the Stars" Week 2 - The Results:

First 2 couples are done 'Dancing'
By SANDY COHEN, AP Entertainment Writer
Wed Mar 26, 3:33 AM PDT

Magician Penn Jillette and tennis champ Monica Seles were the first stars eliminated from the sixth season of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." Each came into Tuesday's results show in last place.

Jillette, 53, added a dash of magic to his quickstep, but his footwork failed to impress the judges. Despite his dismissal, the magician insisted that he and his professional partner would continue to rehearse daily and planned to perform in the parking lot.

"There's no way my dance career ends now," he said.

Before her name was announced, Seles said being the first woman to leave the show "would be really hard."

"I'm not used to losing," said the nine-time Grand Slam champ.

Judge Bruno Tonioli acknowledged that her tennis prowess didn't translate to the dance floor: "You're not a performer, and it's hard for you."

Still, he called the 34-year-old athlete "a legend."

"Somebody of your stature being here with us really is a privilege, and you threw yourself (in) at the deep end," he said.

The show's first double-elimination round also featured a Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatic dance performance and two live songs by tween fave the Jonas Brothers. The pop-rock group played a cover of a-ha's 1985 hit "Take On Me," which was released before the trio of brothers was born, and the new song "When You Look Me in the Eyes."

The remaining competitors include radio host Adam Carolla, pro football player Jason Taylor, Olympic skater Kristi Yamaguchi, R&B singer Mario, and actors Steve Guttenberg, Shannon Elizabeth, Christian de la Fuente, Marlee Matlin, Priscilla Presley and Marissa Jaret Winokur.

Each will perform the tango or jive on next week's show.

Science: Global Warming threatens Lake Tahoe

Study: Warming may threaten Lake Tahoe
Posted Tue Mar 25, 2008 2:58pm PDT

RENO, Nev. - A new study predicts water circulation in Lake Tahoe is being dramatically altered by global warming, threatening the lake's delicate ecosystem and famed clear waters.

The University of California, Davis study said one likely consequence is warmer lake temperatures that will mean fewer cold-water native fish and more invasive species — like carp, large-mouth bass and bluegill.

"What we expect is that deep mixing of Lake Tahoe's water layers will become less frequent, even nonexistent, depleting the bottom waters of oxygen," said Geoffrey Schladow, director of the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at U.S. Davis.

Schladow, Associate Director John Reuter and postdoctoral researcher Goloka Sahoo presented the findings last week in Incline Village at a conference focusing on global warming and deep-water lakes.

The changes, the study concluded, could turn Tahoe's famed cobalt-blue waters to a murky green in about a decade.

"A permanently stratified Lake Tahoe becomes just like any other lake or pond," Schladow said. "It is no longer this unique, effervescent jewel, the finest example of nature's grandeur."

Schladow said researchers are trying to determine if lowered global greenhouse-gas emissions would significantly slow the lake's decline or possibly prevent it.

On average, water in Lake Tahoe — at 1,644 feet deep — mixes every four years, the researchers said.

The water circulation brings nutrients from the bottom to the surface where they promote algae growth. Oxygen from the surface, meanwhile, is spread through the lake and supports aquatic life.

The new study showed that, if global greenhouse-gas emissions continue at current levels, mixing could become less frequent and less deep, and possibly stop as early as 2019.

"While we expected that the lake would mix less in the future, learning that we may be only a decade or two from the complete shutdown of deep mixing was very surprising." Schladow said.

"If mixing shuts down, then no new oxygen gets to the bottom of the lake, and creatures that need it, such as lake trout, will have a large part of their range excluded," Schladow said.

When the oxygen is gone, the study said phosphorus contained in lake-floor sediments would be released and spur algae growth, further damaging the lake's clarity and water quality.

'American Idol' Down, but FOX Still Wins
Tuesday's show falls off from last week

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, March 25, 2008 (USA)

Ratings for "American Idol" fell off a good deal Tuesday, but FOX still won the night by a wide margin.

FOX averaged a 12.1 rating/19 share in primetime, beating second-place ABC, 8.2/13, by some 8 million viewers. NBC finished third with a 5.2/8. CBS drew a 4.6/7 to take fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.2/2.

FOX also ruled the adults 18-49 demographic with an 8.3 rating. ABC finished a distant second at 3.0, just ahead of NBC's 2.9. CBS averaged 2.0 and The CW 0.7.

"American Idol" led the 8 p.m. hour with a 13.6/21 and was down about 11 percent in total viewers (23.8 million vs. 27.2 million) compared to the same hour last week. ABC took second with a recap of Monday's "Dancing with the Stars," 6.8/11. An "NCIS" repeat, 6.1/10, put CBS in third. "The Biggest Loser" came in fourth for NBC, while "Beauty and the Geek" earned a 1.2/2 for The CW.

ABC led in households at 9 p.m. with the "Dancing with the Stars" results show, 10.8/16. FOX, however, brought in more total viewers (and a much better 18-49 rating) with the conclusion of "American Idol," 14.6/22, and "'Til Death," 6.5/10. "The Biggest Loser," 5.5/8, moved NBC into third, ahead of "Big Brother," 3.8/6, on CBS. The CW held steady with "Reaper."

The "Dancing" lead-in helped ABC's "Primetime," 7.0/12, grab the top spot at 10 p.m. A "Law & Order: SVU" rerun on NBC earned a 5.7/10, while the finale of "Jericho" on CBS posted a 3.8/6.

Warner Worried Over CW Miscues

Unhappy over the volume of red ink associated with the network, Warner Bros., sources said, is looking for ways to offset its losses by capitalizing on previous programming successes and the still-popular WB network brand.

John Consoli

MARCH 24, 2008 -

Warner Bros. Television Group’s plan to launch a Web site targeting young consumers with both original streamed programming and vintage shows from the defunct WB is partly the result of the company’s dissatisfaction over how the ratings-challenged CW network is being programmed and marketed under the supervision of partner CBS, said industry insiders familiar with the situation.

Unhappy over the volume of red ink associated with the network (even though it is just in its second year), Warner Bros., sources said, is looking for ways to offset its losses by capitalizing on previous programming successes and the still-popular WB network brand.

Warner officials are said to be perturbed that few Warner Bros. studio shows have been put on The CW schedule. The lone new Warner Bros. drama on the net this season is Gossip Girl, which Warner insiders described as the classic WB show, in the vein of shows that helped put the WB network on the map. “Warner Bros. isn’t making anything off these shows, and they have no second life in syndication,” said one insider.

Various sources both inside Warner Bros. and CBS, and within assorted media agencies, told Mediaweek there is a growing frustration among Warner execs who are unhappy that a good portion of the traditional WB viewership was lost when WB and UPN were merged to form The CW two years ago.

Moreover, some Warner Bros. execs privately believe UPN should have been incorporated into WB, with the latter network keeping its name and stations instead of rebuilding a new network. While WBTG has not publicly confirmed plans to start a younger-skewing Web site, tentatively to be called wb.com (Mediaweek, March 10), it has said it is in the process of developing “several Warner Bros. Web destinations.”

Insiders believe that, if the new wb.com is successful, it could lead to the WB starting a new, young-skewing cable net, should The CW fold. “I think they are covering their bases here,” said one source familiar with the new site, “and are launching it as a trial balloon.”

Said another source: “The young adult marketplace is still robust, and advertisers have said they miss what the WB brand represented.”

The CW was formed two years ago when Warner’s WB and CBS-owned UPN were merged, with a mingling of executives from both networks. A board was formed to run the new network made up of Bruce Rosenblum, WBTG president; Barry Meyer, chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. Entertainment; Les Moonves, president, CEO of CBS Corp.; and Nancy Tellem, president, CBS Paramount TV Entertainment Group. But Warner basically ceded the programming of the network to the CBS executives.

Dawn Ostroff, UPN’s programming president, was put in charge of programming The CW, and the WB promotional team was let go.

“Even though they are part of the joint board, Warner execs gave CBS the authority to run The CW day-to-day,” said one source familiar with the situation. “And they haven’t been able to break a hit. CBS brass seems to be focusing most of their attention on the big network [CBS], and Dawn won’t make a move or spend any money on programming pilots unless it is approved by Les [Moonves].”

CBS and CW representatives declined to comment for this story.

Rosenblum, WBTG president, last week issued a statement to Mediaweek, to dispel the intra-network friction. “Warner Bros. continues to have an excellent relationship with The CW television network and our partners at CBS,” he said. “Our current digital initiatives, as well as those in development, will have absolutely no impact upon or diminish our commitment to The CW, or any of our current broadcast and cable partners.”

He also maintained that a new Web site should not be viewed as a reaction to any unhappiness with CW or for that matter CBS. “At our core, we are a content company with a strategy of providing original programming to broadcast and cable networks, to TV stations via first-run syndication and to broadcasters around the world,” Rosenblum stated. “We see the emerging digital marketplace as an exciting new distribution opportunity for our content, complementing our traditional businesses.”

Rosenblum added, “Warner Bros. has no plans to launch a young adult cable network.” But another executive with knowledge of the situation said Warner Bros. officials can’t be negative publicly toward CBS because the Warner Bros. studio remains a programming provider to CBS and The CW. “You’ll never get Bruce to speak freely about his feelings toward CBS,” the executive said. “[Moonves] is a buyer of TV shows, and Bruce needs him to buy Warner Bros. shows.”

Others argue that The CW’s problems may be more distribution-oriented than about programming. One source said both sides miscalculated in thinking they could build a new distribution network that could rival that of WB. “They thought they would have the pick of both the WB and UPN stations, but they never anticipated Fox coming in and swiping away many of those stations for MyNetworkTV,” the source said. “The CW distribution system is weaker today than WB’s was, and that’s part of the reason why they are having ratings problems.”

Whatever The CW’s problems, media agency execs believe the survival of the network is important for their advertisers. The CW draws a targeted audience of young women that advertisers in many categories want to reach. “Now that The CW is in the situation it’s in,” said one media buyer, “it is important that it find a way turn things around.”

International Television: FOX's Sitcom, "Jezebel James" Assassinated!

No Return for 'Jezebel James' on FOX
Amy Sherman-Palladino's new show axed after airing only three episodes

Someday perhaps a Brad Pitt movie can be made about the assassination of "Jezebel James" by the cowardly FOX.

"The Return of Jezebel James"

After only two airings and three episodes, FOX has pulled the plug on "The Return of Jezebel James."

Effective immediately, FOX has replaced both original episodes of the "Jezebel James" and repeats of 'Til Death" from its Friday schedule. A repeat of "Bones" will serve as the lead-in to the Friday premiere of " Canterbury's Law," which was moved off of Mondays after last week.

Repeats of "Bones" and "House" have, in fact, been the only FOX shows to deliver any sort of ratings in the Friday slot that most recently swiftly claimed the life of "Nashville" and never stirred up even minor attention for "The Next Great American Band."

In its final airing Amy Sherman-Palladino's first show since "Gilmore Girls" did only a 1.4 rating in the key demo of adults 18-49. In its two-episode premiere airing, the show averaged a miniscule audience of just over 3.15 million viewers.

The comedy, which starred Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose, was largely dismissed by critics and likely suffered from FOX's decision to axe a scheduled post-" American Idol" premiere. Things were already looking bleak for "Jezebel James" dating back to October when the network cut the show's series order from 13 episodes to seven and later moved it from a cushy Wednesday time slot to the wasteland of Friday.

ABC, CBS Split Monday
'Dancing with the Stars' strong, but 'How I Met Your Mother,' 'CSI: Miami' deliver demos

Fast National ratings for Monday, April 24, 2008

ABC grabbed Monday's overall ratings title, but Britney Spears' appearance on "How I Met Your Mother" and the return of "CSI: Miami" helped CBS score a demographic victory.

ABC averaged a 10.5 rating/16 share in primetime, beating CBS' 7.8/12. NBC came in third with a 4.8/8. FOX, 4.4/7, took fourth, while The CW could muster only a meager 0.9/1.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, CBS' 4.4 rating beat ABC's 4.2 for the top spot. FOX and NBC tied for third at 2.4. The CW recorded a 0.6.

"Dancing with the Stars," 12.7/20, dominated the 8 p.m. hour for ABC. CBS took second with "The Big Bang Theory," 5.3/9, and "How I Met Your Mother," 6.3/10, which got a bit of a ratings bump from the heavily hyped Spears guest spot. A "House" repeat on FOX drew a 4.8/8. "My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad" drew a paltry 2.7/4 for NBC, but it still finished well clear of The CW's "Gossip Girl" repeat.

ABC held the lead at 9 p.m. as the second hour of "Dancing with the Stars" ticked up to 13.2/20. CBS stayed in second with "Two and a Half Men," 8.7/13, and "Old Christine," 6.3/9. "Deal or No Deal" scored a 6.1/10 for NBC. FOX's "New Amsterdam" was fourth at 3.9/6, while The CW went with "The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious."

The return of "CSI: Miami" delivered a 10.2/16 for CBS at 10 p.m. NBC's "Medium" earned a 5.7/9, edging the 5.5/9 for "The Bachelor: London Calling" on ABC.

ABC Leads Quiet Easter Sunday
Network edges CBS for top spot

Fast National ratings for Sunday, March 23, 2008 (USA)

ABC grabbed the most viewers Sunday night, but that's not saying a whole lot on an Easter Sunday when no network could muster even 10 million viewers.

CBS led the night in households with a 5.5 rating/10 share, but ABC, 5.4/9, had a small lead in total viewers (9.03 million to CBS' 8.68 million). NBC, 4.6/8, came in third. FOX took fourth with a 2.2/4, and The CW drew a typically microscopic 0.8/1.

Among adults 18-49, ABC's 3.1 rating led the way. CBS drew a 2.5 in the demographic to finish second. NBC's 1.7 edged FOX's 1.6 for third, and The CW was well back at 0.5.

Coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament and "60 Minutes" averaged 7.5/15 for CBS at 7 p.m. A repeat of "America's Funniest Home Videos" drew a 4.7/9 for ABC, beating the 3.8/7 for "Dateline NBC." Reruns of "King of the Hill" and "American Dad" put FOX in fourth. The CW posted a 0.8/1 with a repeat of "America's Next Top Model."

At 8 p.m., the conclusion of "60 Minutes" and "Big Brother: Til Death Do You Part" averaged 6.5/11 for CBS. ABC snagged more viewers, however, with "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," 6.4/11. "Dateline" improved to 4.4/8 on NBC, topping a "Simpsons" rerun, 3.0/5, and "Unhitched," 2.1/4, on FOX. The CW went with "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Aliens in America."

"Oprah's Big Give," 6.1/10, kept ABC on top at 9 p.m. A "Law & Order" repeat earned a 5.1/8 for NBC, a point better than "Big Brother" and "Cold Case" on CBS. A "Family Guy" rerun and a second "Unhitched" averaged 2.4/4 for FOX. "The Game" and a "Girlfriends" rerun on The CW posted a 0.9/1.

NBC led at 10 p.m. with a rerun of "Law & Order: SVU," 5.1/9. "Here Come the Newlyweds" posted a 4.5/8 for ABC, while "Cold Case" and "Dexter" averaged 4.0/7 for CBS.

Jesus Take The Wheel (Music Video)
By Carrie Underwood

Lyrics:

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
She was going way too fast

Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
She was sooo scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on

Oh, Jesus take the wheel
Oh, I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel
Oh, take it, take it from me
Oh, why, oh

"The Prayer" - Donnie McClurkin w/ Yolanda Adams

Lyrics:

--Verse (Yolanda)--
I pray You’ll be our eyes
And watch us where we go
And help us to be wise
In times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer
When we lose our way

Lead us to a place
Guide us with Your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe

--Verse (Donnie)—(Yolanda)
I pray we’ll find Your light (I pray we’ll find Your light)
And hold it in our hearts (and hold it in our hearts)
When stars go out each night (when stars go out each night)
Remind us where You are (remind us where You are)
Let this be our prayer (let this be our prayer)
When shadows fill our day (when shadows fill our day)

(D) – Oh Lord, lead us to a place, oh my
(Y) – Guide us with Your grace (guide us with Your grace)
(D/Y) – Give us faith so we’ll be safe

Both:
A world where pain and sorrow will be ended
And every heart that’s broken will be mended
And we’ll remember we are all God’s children
Reaching out to touch you, reaching to the sky

We ask that life be kind (we ask that life be kind)
And watch us from above (and watch us from above)
We hope each soul will find (we hope each soul will find)
Another soul to love (another soul to love)

(D/Y) – Let this be our prayer (let this be our prayer)
(D) – Just like every child (just like every child)

Both:
Needs to find a place
Guide us with Your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe

And that faith you've lit
deep within our hearts
I think faith can save us

International Television: CBS' HD vieweing of NCAA captures 1.8 Million viewers

From MEDIAWEEK:

CBS' NCAA HD Stream Nabs 1.8 Mil.

Nearly 1.8 million fans logged on to CBSSports.com to stream part of the NCAA Men's basketball championship on Mar. 20.

Mike Shields

MARCH 21, 2008 -

The third year of March Madness on Demand is off to a roaring start, thanks to an aggressive distribution strategy initiated by CBS Sports.

Nearly 1.8 million fans logged on to CBSSports.com to stream part of the NCAA Men’s basketball championship on Mar. 20, a whopping increase of 122 percent versus the comparable day last year. That traffic leap was fueled by CBS’ decision to place links to its site’s coverage of the games on 200 sites across the Web, including Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo Sports and SI.com.

That open distribution maneuver, combined with the elimination of registration requirements and CBS’ decision to stream all 63 games for this year’s tournament, boosted usage well beyond last year’s growth, when uniques increased by 10 percent versus year one of MMOD.

“Pushing the links all over the Web was a huge factor,” said Jason Kint, senior vp and general Manager, CBSSports.com. Plus, said Kint, CBS increased its streaming capacity for this year’s tournament, significantly decreasing the time fans needed to wait to log on. “We just get better every year at running this thing,” he said.

So much so that advertisers are likely to be quite pleased. Kint said he had estimated that MMOD might see 50 percent growth in audience. "We didn’t tell advertisers it would be this big,” he said.

In addition to the 1,751,956 unique visitors recorded yesterday (compared to the 789,045 in 2007), there were over 1.2 million clicks on the MMOD video player’s “Boss Button” - which immediately displays a fake spreadsheet when click, so at work users can avoid getting caught watching basketball on the job.
