Majority of this year’s top 10 show biz stories were not headline-hogging events that happened with the public’s conscious attention:
1. ABS-CBN regains leadership. Under the stewardship of Gabby Lopez as chief operating officer and president, and Charo Santos-Concio as head of television, ABS-CBN regains the leadership of the country’s broadcast industry.
2. Sitti sets a trend. Releasing an albumful of bossa nova songs recorded in the comfort room of the restaurant where she sings, Sitti jumpstarts the growing bossa nova trend.
3. Kubrador breaks standards. For coming up with an original movie in very real terms about the controversial numbers game jueteng, Kubrador crushed cinematic conventions, which made it the year’s most awarded movie in the global filmfest circuit!
4. Kris Aquino is pregnant! After owning up that they were civilly married last year, Kris announced that she’s heavy with James Yap’s child.
5. Digital movies fail to live up to promise. Even as the digital technology liberalized moviemaking, it increased the number of flops released during the tear.
6. Wowowee grabs number one position! Despite the Ultra stampede, Wowowee crumbled Eat...Bulaga’s stronghold of the noontime television timeslot as spearheaded by host Willie Revillame.
7. ABC stages first Philippine Idol. The successful staging of the local franchise of American Idol confirmed ABC’s serious bid to become a major player in the local broadcast industry.
8. Empty movie theaters. The increase of malls in the metro cuts the the percentage of occupancy per movie theater.
9. Sukob is all-time topgrosser. Star Cinema’s Sukob, a Kris Aquino and Claudine Barretto starrer, breaks the lead of Tanging Ina at the country’s top money earner in movies with a gross sales of more than P200 million.
10. DJ Mo shows how to make a successful comeback. The Forbidden Questions segment of his radio program stirred enough controversy that made him the most frequently hated biz personality for the year.
