Star Trek Online unveiled
New game will boldly go where Warcraft has gone before.
By Ben Silverman
Despite Star Trek's standing as the most beloved intergalactic exploration mythos in geek history, it has yet to take on the addictive and lucrative world of massively-multiplayer gaming. Until now. Could this be a seriously legitimate contender to World of Warcraft's reign over all online games?
After escaping the clutches of a developmental worm hole, Star Trek Online finally docked at the annual Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. Unveiling the game was none other than Leonard Nimoy, best known as pointy-eared logician Spock from the original series.
Set in the year 2409, Star Trek Online will let gamers play as a Federation captain or a Klingon warrior as they build and command ships, fight enemies and explore the galaxy. The game took the circuitous route to the Vegas convention, having bounced around several different developers until landing in the capable hands of MMO veterans Cryptic Studios.

Cryptic chief creative officer and self-described Trekker Jack Emmert is especially excited at the prospect of producing an online game that fans have long been clamoring for.
"I spent many, many Saturday afternoons watching reruns of Star Trek and dreaming of its worlds. Leonard Nimoy helped inspire my imagination of what mysteries the universe might in fact hold," he said in a press release. "I'd like to think that very same imagination is what fuels my desire and drive as a game designer, pushing toward creating an MMO that is the ultimate Star Trek experience."
To become the ultimate video game experience, however, Star Trek online will have to find a way to topple the seemingly insurmountable World of Warcraft. Despite the success of recent chart-topper Age of Conan, Blizzard's RPG remains far and away the leading massively-multiplayer game, with well over 10 million players worldwide. The next entry in the franchise, Wrath of the Lich King, is due this Fall.
Cryptic has hit pay dirt with past games like City of Heroes, however, and while no release date has been announced for Star Trek Online, its mere presence at the Trek convention already has fans buzzing. The official site's forums were flooded with posts after the game's first official trailer was shown.
