Friday 9/05/08:
-Total Viewers:
Fox: 7.57 million, ABC: 4.96, CW: 4.72, CBS: 3.32, NBC: 2.90
-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 2.0 rating/7 share, ABC and CW: 1.4/ 5 each, CBS: 0.9/ 3, NBC: 0.8/ 2
--------------------
Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.
----------
-Friday’s Winners:
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox)
-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Fall Preview (CBS), NFL Kick-Off (NBC), Swingtown (CBS)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown:
The two episode season-premiere of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? led Fox to Friday victory, with an average 7.57 million viewers and a 2.0 rating/7 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Given Fox’s former Friday night woes, this is a real positive for the network. Congrats, J.P.!
Friday was an unprecedented night of television, of course, with the Big 3 networks simultaneously airing 8-9 p.m. fund raiser Stand Up to Cancer. Here is the rating breakdown:
8 p.m./Stand Up to Cancer
ABC – Viewers: 3.81 million, A18-49: 0.9/ 3
NBC – Viewers: 3.32 million, A18-49: 0.8/ 3
CBS – Viewers: 3.16 million, A18-49: 0.7/ 3
Second behind Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? at 9 p.m. was the second half of Friday Night Smackdown! on the CW, with 4.86 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 among adults 18-49. Overall, Friday Night Smackdown! averaged 4.72 million viewers and a 1.4/ 5 in the demo from 8-10 p.m.
ABC aired a repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos at 9 p.m., which averaged 4.42 million viewers (#3) and a 1.3/ 4 among adults 18-49 (#3). That led into veteran 20/20, which won the 10 p.m. hour with 6.65 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49.
CBS programmed the 9-11 p.m. block with a half-hour Fall Preview (Viewers: #4, 3.38 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 3), a repeat of The New Adventures of Old Christine (Viewers: #4, 2.98 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 2), and the season (or series) finale of Swingtown (Viewers: #2, 3.62 million; A18-49: #2, 1.2/ 4). My guess this was the last we will ever see of Swingtown.
NBC capped off the two-hour block with a one-hour NFL Kick-Off special (Viewers: #5, 1.91 million; A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 2) and Dateline (Viewers: #3, 3.47 million; A18-49: #3, 0.9/ 3).
