The selection of this year's 12 on " American Idol" gave FOX another ratings victory Thursday, but the news wasn't as good for its lead-out.
FOX averaged a 10.7 rating/16 share in primetime, winning the night by a sizable margin over CBS, 6.7/11. ABC came in third with a 5.4/9. NBC's 4.3/7 took fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.3/2.
Among the 18- to 49-year-olds that are gold to advertisers, FOX's 6.5 rating led the way. ABC finished second in the demographic with a 3.3, topping CBS' 3.0. NBC averaged 2.6 and The CW 0.8.
"American Idol" scored a 14.9/23 at 8 p.m. as it revealed this season's finalists. CBS grabbed second with "Survivor: Micronesia - Fans vs. Favorites," 7.3/11. A "Lost" rerun drew a 3.7/6 for ABC, beating an hour of "The Office" on NBC. A "Smallville" encore on The CW earned a 1.5/2.
ABC moved to the lead at 9 p.m. with a new "Lost," 7.6/12. FOX's "New Amsterdam" drew a 6.5/10, losing 3 million viewers from its post-"Idol" premiere Tuesday. CBS was close behind in third with a "CSI" rerun, 6.4/10. "The Celebrity Apprentice" averaged 5.9/9 for NBC, while The CW finished its night with "Reaper" (1.1/2).
At 10 p.m., CBS' "Without a Trace" rerun scored a 6.5/11 to win the hour. "Eli Stone" posted a 5.0/8 for ABC, and NBC's "Lipstick Jungle" came in at 4.2/7.
