Both ABS-CBN (left), and GMA Network (right) had a network war since the early 1990's. Almost 15 years, these networks haven't stop or had a cease fire on the ratings game. It said that ABS-CBN was closed during the Philippine Martial Law of 1972, ABS-CBN suffered and ranked 5th among the top 5 networks in Metro Manila. Probably the #1 spot was owned by GMA-7 but GMA-7 wasn't #1, it was RPN-9 & Public Televison (also known as PTV Channel 4). RPN and PTV didn't have a war, it was only public service. But when ABS-CBN was officially opened again in year 1986, ABS-CBN started to introduce soap operas, GMA-7 then followed. But when 1990's entered a war of money, ratings, viewers & etc. started. The competition was getting hotter and hotter, hotter than a lava. But what network is really the #1 Channel? Some say, GMA-7. Yes, GMA-7 is #1 in Mega Manila and ABS-CBN leads in the provinces. No doubt about that one and it was also said by AGB Nielsen Media Research. But in the Philippine TV History Ratings Chart, ABS-CBN and GMA-7 dominates the chart (Oh well, ABS-CBN dominated the #1 spot and the most of the figure). For the Philippine TV Shows Category referring to TELESERIES only, "Esperanza," top-billed by Judy Ann Santos, Wowie de Guzman and Piolo Pascual was the #1 Show in Phil. TV History that registered a dominating rating of 63.5%.
