WWE: SmackDown! Roundup (11/30/07)

Kane (left) and the master of 619, Rey Mysterio (right) teamed up and defeated Big Daddy V and MVP

ROANOKE, Va. – It turns out that all Rey Mysterio & Kane needed was a little help from an associate – in this case, each other – to take down the threat of MVP & Big Daddy V on Friday night.

Last week on SmackDown, Mysterio fell to MVP in a non-title match, thanks to the United States Champion’s use of the top rope. As for Kane, it was an appearance by Mark Henry that cost him an Extreme Rules Match against Big Daddy V Tuesday night on ECW. Having presumably seen what had happened to the other, both Mysterio & Kane certainly had reason to watch each other’s backs once their huge tag team opportunity rolled around this week.

The United States Champion and his 500-pound partner looked downright dominant at times, but in the end, the Master of the 619 and the Big Red Monster got the duke. With the two monsters occupying each other outside the ring, Mysterio flattened MVP with a 619 and springboard splash to claim the victory. (

Rey’s budding rivalry with the Ballin’ Superstar seems to have picked up a big head of steam. With Friday’s pinfall over MVP, is an opportunity at the United States Championship potentially in Rey’s future?

Fool me once, shame on you…
Jamie Noble also seems to be on a roll, as for the second straight week, he scored a pinfall victory over Chuck Palumbo. Once again, Noble tried to use his Southern charm on Michelle McCool earlier in the night. This time, however, he wasn’t just blown off by the beautiful blonde; Noble was also accosted by Palumbo, who brushed aside last week’s match as a “fluke” in Noble’s favor.

That may have been an oversight on Palumbo’s part, as the motorcycle enthusiast once again wheeled home with the loser’s share of the purse this week. Just like in their previous encounter, Noble was able to take advantage of one tiny mistake in the corner of the ring; when Chuck got hung up after missing a kick, Noble rolled him up for the 1-2-3. Leprechaun crosses the tracks
While it’s unclear whether Belfast, Northern Ireland or the Other Side of the Tracks is a tougher neighborhood, our fans got a glimpse of resolution when Finlay & Hornswoggle took on Deuce & Domino. Michael Cole & JBL wondered on commentary whether or not having the littlest McMahon as his partner made Finlay an underdog against the former WWE Tag Team Champions – but as they have quite often in the past, the Irishmen proved that they make one dangerous team.

Late in the bout, things looked bleak for Hornswoggle when Deuce & Domino ditched Finlay and cornered the little man. But when they attempted to whip the pint-sized prankster with their belts, the referee confiscated the leather lashers. That allowed Finlay to grab his shillelagh, and with the ref’s back turned, the ornery Irishman gave Deuce a crack in his own mouth with the wooden weapon. One Tadpole Splash later, Finlay & Hornswoggle were victorious.

After witnessing his son’s victory, WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon met with Ranjin Singh later in the night. After making Singh act out some impressions – including one of Hornswoggle and one of Singh’s own client, The Great Khali – the Chairman and the translator made sure that Khali was ready for his big match with Finlay at Armageddon.

You made your bed, now lie in it
ECW Champion CM Punk made another appearance on Friday Night SmackDown, battling Kenny Dykstra in a non-title match. Punk gutted out a tough victory when these two met in the Land of the Extreme two weeks ago, but the self-proclaimed “future Hall of Famer” hoped things would be different on his home turf.

The Straightedge Superstar had other plans, however. Despite putting up a valiant effort, Dykstra hit another speed bump on road to the Hall of Fame; this time, he got to Go to Sleep in his own bed – or ring, as it were – as the ECW Champion made it 2-for-2 against the 21-year-old.

Three-dogged night
Thanks to his main squeeze, General Manager Vickie Guerrero, Edge got his chance to regain the World Heavyweight Championship from Batista in SmackDown’s much-anticipated main event. The Rated-R Superstar dedicated the match to Vickie – who is still recuperating from Undertaker’s attack the previous week – but someone else would later have a dedication of their own for Edge.

Just when Batista looked like he was ready to finally beat Edge in a championship match for the first time this year, Undertaker returned a favor to the Rated-R Superstar by interrupting the match. Edge felt Batista’s spear, but when the Rated-R Superstar bailed out of the ring, The Phenom lashed out at the closest Superstar he could find, dropping Batista with a Phenom-enal chokeslam. But when all was said and done, a returning Theodore Long was the one to drop the biggest bombshell.

'Shrek the Halls' Delivers Holiday Cheer Wednesday
Special leads ABC to demo win; CBS takes viewer title

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007 (USA)

Big ratings for a new Christmas special helped ABC to a demographic win Wednesday, but CBS snagged the overall crown.

For the night, CBS averaged a 7.9 rating/12 share. ABC was close behind with a 7.1/11 (the two networks were separated by only about 100,000 viewers). NBC finished third at 4.7/7, beating out FOX's 4.0/6. The CW pulled down a 2.7/4.

ABC's holiday special, "Shrek the Halls"

ABC led among adults 18-49 with a 4.5 rating, finishing a point ahead of CBS, 3.5. FOX came in third with a 2.8. NBC managed only a 2.1 but held off The CW's 1.9 in the race for fourth.

A pair of specials -- "Shrek the Halls," which premiered to a huge 11.0/17, and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," 9.4/14 -- ruled the 8 p.m. hour for ABC. NBC's "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" scored a 6.0/9. CBS' "Kid Nation" was third, topping an hour of "'Til Death," 3.6/6, on FOX. "America's Next Top Model" earned a 3.3/5 for The CW (and finished second to ABC in adults 18-49).

[Additional Info #1: Animated "Shrek the Halls" debuted on ABC with an impressive (and dominant) 21.06 million viewers and a 7.2 rating/20 share among adults 18-49 8 p.m. Comparably, I don’t not recall any holiday special on ABC ever performing this well. That led into a repeat of classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" at a first-place 18.74 million viewers and a 6.8/17 in the demo at 8:30 p.m.]

[Additional Info #2: The CW’s cherished "America’s Next Top Model" capped off the hour with 5.03 million viewers (#5) and a second-place 2.4/ 7 among adults 18-49. Anytime a CW show can rise to the No. 2 spot, it’s off to the winner’s listing!]

CBS moved in front at 9 p.m. with "Criminal Minds," 10.0/15. ABC dropped to second with "Pushing Daisies," 6.2/9. "Kitchen Nightmares," 4.3/7, came in third for FOX. NBC's "Bionic Woman" was fourth, while "Gossip Girl" scored a 2.1/3 for The CW.

At 10 p.m., CBS' "CSI: NY" scored a 9.1/15 -- which was the combined total of ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money," 5.0/8, and NBC's "Life," 4.1/7.

[Mega Manila] TV Ratings (Nov. 26-28): "Whammy!" and "Daisy Siete" battle for daytime supremacy

Whammy! Push Your Luck and Daisy Siete once more took turns for the No. 1 spot this week in the daytime race while Marimar continues its grip at the primetime leadership despite the pressure being exerted by Kamandag.

For Monday, November 26, Whammy! Push Your Luck managed to pull out from a squeaker against the 17th season of Daisy Siete titled "Ulingling." Paolo Bediones and Rufa Mae Quinto's game show collected a slim 25.9 percent rating versus the 25.8 percent clip accumulated by Daisy Siete.

Trailing the leaders were Eat Bulaga! (24.4 percent) and the dangerous Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal (21.1 percent). Both shows nailed the third and fourth spot respectively.

This time, carrying a much safer lead, Whammy! confidently asserted its presence the following day, November 27, through its 26.1 percent showing. Daisy Siete, on the other hand, garnered a 22.3 percent rating to settle at second place.

There'll be no three in a row feat, however, for Whammy! as Daisy Siete finally caught them taking a nap on November 28, Wednesday. Pouncing on the opportunity, Daisy Siete overtook Whammy!, which slipped to third place behind Deal or No Deal's 22.9 percent rating. The rest of the daytime contenders remained pretty much the same except for Prinsesa ng Banyera, which nailed the tenth spot based on the strength of its 12.3 percent rating.

The primetime battle remained one sided.

Talking about the top spot, as Marimar remained unruffled despite Kamandag's unrelenting hustle. On November 26, Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes earned 44.9 percent while Kamandag gathered 41.4 percent.

Despite relinquishing the second spot since Kamandag's entry, Zaido is still an adversary to contend with. Last Monday, November 26, Zaido took the fourth spot, pacing 24 Oras's 36.3 percent rating.

Pangarap Na Bituin and Princess Sarah were also engaged with their own battle. November 26 witnessed Princess Sarah getting the better of Pangarap Na Bituin as proven by its 26.7 percent rating against the latter's 25.2 percent. The next day weaved a different result as Pangarap Na Bituin gained a 27.1 percent rating while Princess Sarah gathered 26.0 percent.

Fast National ratings for Monday, Nov. 26, 2007 (USA)

At 10 p.m., "Sunday Night Football" delivered its best hour of the night with a 12.3/20. ABC's "Brothers & Sisters," 8.4/14, was second, beating out "Cold Case," 8.1/13, on CBS.

-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC stood well above the competition care of Saturday Night Football (a Big 12 showdown between Missouri vs. Kansas) at an average 10.14 million viewers and a 3.3 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 from 8-11 p.m. Comparably, this was the alphabet net’s highest rated Saturday of the season.

In the distant No. 2 spot was FOX’s perennial combination of Cops (Viewers: 6.76 million; A18-49: 2.3/ 7) and America’s Most Wanted (Viewers: 6.59 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 6) from 8-10 p.m. The compatibility between the two non-scripted series is flawless.

CBS finished third overall in total viewers and last among adults 18-49 as a result of a repeat of CSI: Miami (Viewers: #3, 5.01 million; A18-49: #4: 1.3/ 4), a repeat of CSI: NY (Viewers: #4, 5,87 million; A18-49: #4: 1.4/ 4) and 48 Hours Mystery (Viewers: #2: 7.09 million; A18-49: #2: 1.7/ 5). And NBC was just the opposite -- last in total viewers and third among adults 18-49 -- with its combination of a repeat of theatrical The Incredibles (Viewers: 5.58 million; A18-49: 2.0/6 from 8-10:30 p.m.) and a repeat of 30 Rock (Viewers: #3: 3.36 million; A18-49: #3, 1.2/ 4). Retention for 30 Rock out of the last half-hour of The Incredibles (Viewers: 6.29 million; A18-49: 2.4/ 7) was just 53 percent in total viewers and 50 percent among adults 18-49. No matter where NBC positions 30 Rock, viewers flee.

SmackDown!'s The Undertaker

Still a 'Numb3rs' Game for CBS on Friday
ABC's 'Women's Murder Club' continues to beat CBS' 'Moonlight'

Fast National ratings for Friday, Nov. 23, 2007 (USA)

Despite some consistent competition from NBC's family movie, CBS once again claimed ratings victory on Friday.

The Eye earned a 5.8 rating/10 share in primetime, followed by NBC and ABC tied for second in households at 4.4/8 apiece. The CW's 2.8/5 nabbed was good for fourth, beating FOX's 2.1/4.

CBS did similarly well in the adults 18-49 demographic, grabbing a 2.5 rating for the lead. NBC took second place with a 2.2, while ABC and The CW tied it up with 1.6 reach. FOX trailed with a 1.3.

Holiday audiences were feeling the love early on when "Ghost Whisperer," 6.3/11, took the lead at 8 p.m. NBC made a good showing this hour taking second for the beginning of the Nicolas Cage film "The Family Man," 4.1/7. ABC's "Men in Trees," 3.8/7 wasn't far behind. "WWE Friday Night SmackDown!" fared well for The CW with a 2.8/5, way ahead of FOX's dismal showing for "The Next Great American Band."

[Additional Info: The first hour of SmackDown! lured a 4.96 million viewers and a 1.6/5 A18-49 demo rating]

"Women's Murder Club," 5.3/9, moved ABC in front at 9 p.m. CBS stayed in second with "Moonlight," 4.7/8, while NBC stayed steady with more Nic Cage shenanigans, 4.5/8. "SmackDown!," 2.8/5 on the CW could not be smacked down from fourth, although FOX's "Don't Forget the Lyrics" improved FOX's numbers considerably with a 2.5/4 for the hour.

[Additional Info: The second hour of SmackDown! managed 5.20 million viewers and a 1.7/5 A18-49 demographic rating. Too bad The CW’s schedule is not as solid on the rest of the week.]

[SmackDown! averaged 5.08 million viewers from 8-10 p.m. and a 1.6/5 in the demographic.]

In the 10 o'clock hour, "Numb3rs" easily led the hour with a 6.3/11. The final hour of "The Family Man," 4.8/9, gave NBC second place, while ABC's "20/20," 4.1/7 finished the evening in third.

WWE SmackDown!: More on "Rated 'T' for Tombstone

SmackDown!: Ouch, that hurts, a Tombstone Piledriver from The Undertaker to the Acting General Manager of SmackDown! (Vickie Guerrero).

Rated 'T' for Tombstone

SmackDown! photo: Think that photo is bad? It only got worse from there for Vickie Guerrero.

– The night after Thanksgiving marked Edge’s return to SmackDown, and his presence alone was enough to ensure that chaos would ensue. That said, however, no one could have expected the chain of events that occurred on Friday night.

The Rated-R Superstar promised in a WWE Mobile on AT&T exclusive video that he would answer all questions about why he screwed Undertaker at Survivor Series once SmackDown rolled around. The night promised the return of The Cutting Edge – with none other than World Heavyweight Champion Batista as the guest – and the anticipation of Edge’s explanation was high.

Our fans did not have to wait long, however, as they and SmackDown Superstars alike found out everything they needed to know just minutes into the broadcast. Acting General Manager Vickie Guerrero had the Rated-R Superstar in her office to review the events of Survivor Series, and she sternly punished him for ruining Undertaker’s final championship opportunity … by granting him a World Heavyweight Championship Match against Edge next week?

Yes, folks, you read that right; that was indeed what happened. And moments later, the jig was up as Edge and Vickie laughed together, revealing that it was all a plot and they were in cahoots all along. Stomachs then churned as the Rated-R Superstar and Acting GM shared a passionate kiss to cement their alliance.

Later, a disgusted Batista accosted Vickie in her office, calling Edge “slime” and wanting one good reason why he deserved a World Championship Match. The leader of the Blue Crew offered two: “He deserves it … and I love him,” leaving the rest for later in the night.

Finally, it was time for The Cutting Edge, where the Rated-R Superstar and his new main squeeze continued their mutual admiration society.

“It feels great to stand here as your new No. 1 Contender,” Edge crowed. “And there’s someone I’d like to thank: The love of my life, Vickie Guerrero.”

As our fans in Tampa – and most likely those watching around the globe at home – groaned in disbelief, Edge further revealed his alliance with Ms. Guerrero.

“What you see here is the product of four months of careful planning,” Edge said. “The culmination is next week when I become the new World Heavyweight Champion!”

With that, he brought out his guest, the “soon to be former” champion, Batista. The Animal, however, wasn’t in the mood to be interviewed, quickly cutting off his next opponent in a very un-Batista-esque manner.

“SHUT UP!” The Animal commanded. “You make me sick!”

Edge tried to interject his feelings, claiming how Batista doesn’t deserve to hold “his” World Heavyweight Championship, but The Animal wasn’t hearing it.

“You don’t deserve a World Title match … but you deserve every ounce of the ass whooping I’m going to give you!”

Batista then shoved Edge down and stormed out of the ring, setting a very domineering tone for their future confrontation. Unfortunately for the Rated-R Superstar, things only got worse from there. As he stared back in The Animal’s direction, a gong chimed and the lights went out in the arena, something that could only signify the presence of one (dead) man: Undertaker.

When the lights returned, The Phenom was in the ring behind Edge and Vickie. The Rated-R Superstar quickly fled when Undertaker reached for him, running like Gorilla Monsoon’s proverbial thief in the night. However, he forgot one important thing: His girlfriend.

Poor Vickie was left alone with The Phenom, and left with the choice of internalizing his hostilities or lashing out at the Acting General Manager. Let’s just say The Deadman wasn’t shy about broadcasting his feelings. Edge looked on in horror, but there was nothing he could do as Undertaker scooped Vickie up and dropped her with a vicious Tombstone Piledriver – executed very methodically perhaps for reasons of further destroying any sanity Edge may have.

The battle lines have clearly been drawn, and it looks like Edge is on the business end of all of them. However, after seeing the “love of his life” removed from the arena on a stretcher – footage you can see in the latest WWE Mobile on AT&T exclusive video – will he go into battle against Batista next week without his top ally? And what about The Phenom? He seemingly said all he needed to by dropping Vickie Guerrero with a Tombstone – or did he? Will he be lurking next week?

The only thing for sure about this combustible situation is that it’s just getting started.

WWE: SmackDown! Roundup

SmackDown!'s Kane clobbers ECW's behemoth Big Daddy V with a chair

TAMPA, Fla. – The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest retail shopping day of the year, earning it the nickname “Black Friday.” On SmackDown, however, Black Friday took on a new meaning, as Superstars from the Land of the Extreme made their presence felt against the Blue Crew.

Second verse, same as the first
The monstrous rivalry between Kane and Big Daddy V exploded once again on SmackDown, as the two monsters met in singles action. Kane was looking for payback for ECW on Sci Fi, when he defeated Big Daddy V & Matt Striker in a Handicap Match.

Kane was victorious again on SmackDown, this time by disqualification. As the Big Red Monster was seemingly on the road to victory, Striker got involved with a steel chair – getting his protégé disqualified in the process. However, Kane thwarted Striker’s attempted chicanery, clobbering him with a clothesline before smashing the chair across Big Daddy V’s ample back. (WATCH)

Irish eyes are crying
As another act of “tough love,” Mr. McMahon put son Hornswoggle into a match with another massive opponent – this time, the World’s Strongest Man, Mark Henry. Finlay, however, had a problem with that, telling McMahon that this wasn’t part of their “deal.” Instead, the WWE Chairman set up a Handicap Match – Finlay & Hornswoggle vs. Henry. Thanks to a little help from their trusty shillelaghs, the Irish duo picked up the victory. After the bout, however, Finlay’s past of helping Hornswoggle finally caught up with him. As The Great Khali – who the ornery Irishman assaulted with a shillelagh during his Survivor Series Match with the lil’ leprechaun – approached ringside, the World’s Strongest Man assaulted Finlay from behind. Khali then added a devastating choke bomb to the Irishman’s misery, as poor, frightened Hornswoggle could only look on in horror from the corner. (WATCH)

A night of seconds
WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison made the second defense of their newly won gold, taking on The Major Brothers. Brett & Brian Major had hoped their second WWE Tag Team Title Match would end better than the first, but unfortunately, once again, they came up just short. The brothers from Long Island fought valiantly, though, even with Brett Major busted wide open by John Morrison. Miz & Morrison seemed to show no ill effects from being opponents at Survivor Series, retaining their gold after Miz gave Brian Major a Reality Check.

Engine failure
Jamie Noble may have put his foot in his mouth once again on SmackDown, but this time, he ended up getting the last laugh. Prior to Noble’s match with Chuck Palumbo, Michelle McCool caught him straddling Palumbo’s chopper. Noble tried to sweet talk the beautiful blond Diva, but his advances were quickly spurned. No matter for Noble, who survived a tough match and pulled out a surprising victory, using the motorcycle enthusiast’s size against him to gain the pinfall with a roll-up.

Going 2-for-2 in the Sunshine State
After being on the winning side of a 10-Divas Tag Team Match at Survivor Series, Torrie Wilson once again found the winner’s circle on SmackDown. This time, the blond bombshell from Boise showed off her ring prowess in solo action against Victoria, one of the Divas on the losing end at Survivor Series. Moments after escaping Victoria’s dreaded Widow’s Peak, Torrie dropped her opponent with a neckbreaker to seal the victory.

The Champ is still here … sort of
Jesse & Festus also made a SmackDown appearance, but not in the ring. Instead, they came as fans … well, fans and perhaps merchandisers, as Jesse extolled the virtues of the new John Cena – My Life DVD with his big buddy Festus in tow – dressed to the nines in Cena gear, of course. Unfortunately, their time was cut short thanks to Festus’ insistence of another DVD viewing, but before leaving, the burly country boy made it known that if you don’t follow The Champ’s virtues of hustle, loyalty and respect, then perhaps you can’t see him. (WATCH)

Rated “T” for Tombstone
Edge said that SmackDown would be where he answered all the questions about why he screwed Undertaker. It was learned that Edge’s actions were the culmination of four months of planning with “the love of his life,” Acting SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero. Once the two revealed they were in cahoots, Vickie named Edge the new No. 1 Contender to the World Heavyweight Championship, granting him a match against Batista next week. But when The Animal was the guest on the return edition of The Cutting Edge, all Hell broke loose. The angry champion manhandled the smitten Rated-R Superstar, while Undertaker made his presence felt by giving Edge’s main squeeze a taste of Tombstone. Read the whole story…

Most valuable presentation
United States Champion MVP was primed for a big night, as JBL was set to award him the first-ever “United States Championship Championship Ring” on behalf of the United Nations. That wouldn’t be the only ring MVP got a feel for on this night, however; after listening to the Ballin’ Superstar run down Matt Hardy, Rey Mysterio had enough and challenged MVP to a non-title match. Rey nearly was able to pull off the victory, but a little help from one of the U.S. Champion’s true friends – the top rope – helped Porter pick up a victory in his home state. Read the whole story…

Overall, CBS averaged a 7.4 rating/14 share for the night, comfortably ahead of the 5.7/11 for ABC and the 3.7/7 for NBC. FOX's 2.4/5 and the 0.8/1 for The CW were far back.

CBS also won among adults 18-49 (the demo most heavily impacted by the Thanksgiving drop), doing a 3.6 rating. ABC was second in the key demo with a 3.1 rating, followed by the 2.5 rating for NBC. FOX's 1.5 rating and the 0.4 rating for The CW trailed again.

A "Survivor: China" clip show did a 6.2/12 at 8 p.m. to begin CBS' primetime sweep. ABC's "Ugly Betty" was second for the hour with 4.6/9. The first hour of NBC's telecast of "The Incredibles" had a 3.6/7, thumping the 2.4/5 for the first hour of FOX's "Dodgeball." The CW aired "Raise Your Voice," but nobody noticed.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" had an 8.5/16 to give CBS the 9 p.m. hour over the 8.2/15 for ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" (ABC won the hour among adults 18-49). NBC's "The Incredibles" was up to a 3.8/7, while FOX's movie remained stable and The CW's movie did a 0.7/1.

CBS closed strong with a 7.5/14 for "Without a Trace." A special sneak of "October Road" on ABC lost more than 7 million viewers from its lead-in and did a 4.1/8. NBC's movie was steady in third.

TV Review: 'October Road' Season Two
ABC drama can't seem to get over the ridge

By Rick Porter
November 21, 2007

"October Road" returns for its second season on ABC Thursday, and not much has changed.

For those of you who fell for the characters in the show's brief run last spring, that's probably good news. From this couch, though, it's frustrating: There are pieces of a good show here and there, some well-observed moments and a couple of relationships that feel pretty real. But, like a number of its characters, the series feels like it's stuck in the same place.

If "October Road" were a different kind of show, you could argue that that's part of the point -- the place they've always known is as much a trap as it is a haven. But "October Road" doesn't seem to have that on his mind; it's a small-town soap opera with a star-crossed romance at its center. Existential crises are not the first order of business.

There is a bit of movement in that central romance as season two begins, more or less where things left off last spring. One-hit-wonder novelist Nick Garrett (Bryan Greenberg), having professed his love to childhood sweetheart Hannah Daniels (Laura Prepon) last season, is trying to come to terms with Hannah not returning those feelings. Which, in Thursday's season premiere (the show moves to its regular Monday-night home next week), he does by heading back to New York with best buddy Eddie (Geoff Stults).

The two are ostensibly chasing after Owen Rowan (Brad William Henke), who split town after learning his wife was having an affair with another of the boys, Ikey (Evan Jones), and is fast approaching the point of no return. But it also feels, more than a little bit, like Nick isn't quite willing to face up to a life in Knights Ridge without Hannah.

There wouldn't be a show if Nick decided to stay in his fabulous New York apartment, however, so soon enough he and the boys are back home. Nick tries to settle into an academic's life, Owen avoids his wife and Ikey, Eddie and nice-girl bartender Janet (Rebecca Field) ponder going public with their relationship and Ray "Big Cat" Cataldo (Warren Christie) tries to rekindle things with Hannah.

In the three episodes ABC sent to critics, things don't go a whole lot further than that, and the show actually seems to struggle with a reason to keep Nick in town after Hannah rejects him. He pings aimlessly from one small atonement to the next, which in turn makes the show feel like it's at loose ends.

That's how viewers may end up feeling, too, after watching "October Road." The small moments that are good -- the budding relationship between shut-in Physical Phil (Jay Paulson) and the pizza girl (Lindy Booth), most scenes involving Field's Janet -- don't add up to a strong enough whole to make the weekly trip down this "Road" worthwhile.

Crime Still Pays for CBS on Wednesday
Network snagged the ratings and demo wins

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007

CBS once again reigned midweek as its slate of crime dramas not only took the overall ratings win, but also handily brought home the adults 18-49 demographic bragging rights.

The Eye averaged a 7.6 rating/13 share in primetime, beating NBC's 5.4/9 for the top spot. ABC's 5.0/8 wasn't far behind for third, while FOX, 3.3/6, came in fourth, and the CW trailed woefully with a 1.7/3.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, CBS led with a 3.1 rating, beating NBC's 2.5 and ABC's 2.3. FOX took fourth with a 1.9, followed by The CW 1.7.

ABC's "Pushing Daisies" led at 8 p.m. with a 4.7/8. CBS' "Kid Nation," 4.3/7, edged NBC's "Phenomenon" and FOX's repeats of "Back to You" and "'Til Death," averaging 3.3/6 for the hour. A brand new "America's Next Top Model" delivered a 2.5/4 for The CW.

The night's best rating went to CBS' "Criminal Minds," 9.6/16, for the second week in a row at the 9 o'clock hour. "Private Practice" put ABC in second with a 5.7/9, just barely ahead of NBC's third-place "Deal or No Deal," 5.4/9. [Mega Manila] TV Ratings (Nov. 16–18): "Marimar" achieves new milestone while "Kamandag" primer spews venom

Daisy Siete continued its winning run as "Tabachingching" concluded its season on top with a 26.9 percent rating in the daytime race last Friday, November 16, to beat Eat Bulaga! (24.1 percent), Whammy! Push Your Luck (22.4 percent), and Pasan Ko ang Daigdig (21.2 percent). Daisy Siete's final stretch was the number one daytime program the entire week.

But the biggest news was reserved in the primetime category. Marimar broke boundaries once more by registering a startling 49.5 percent rating to shatter its previous best of 48.5 percent last November 13.

Viewers and critics are now waiting with bated breath to see whether Marimar would finally make it into the elite circle of programs that have reached 50% or plus rating.

Saturday shows in the daytime column found themselves stung as the primer of GMA-7's new fantaserye Kamandag, starring Richard Gutierrez, slithered its way to the No. 1 spot, based on the might of its 29 percent rating. Eat Bulaga! wasn't far behind as the longest-running noontime show in the country gave Ang Bagsik ng Kamandag a tough time with its 28.2 percent clip.

The 12th anniversary presentation of StarTalk, which is co-hosted by the controversial Lolit Solis, placed No. 6 overall with its 16 percent performance. Makisig Morales's Super Inggo 1.5, in the meantime, slipped to seventh spot as the one-time topnotcher amassed a 15.1 percent rating.

In the primetime race, Michael V's Bitoy's Funniest Videos once more wrestled the lead from Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. This time, Bitoy's program garnered a strong 35.3 percent rating, followed by Janno Gibbs's Kakasa Ka Ba sa Grade 5's 33.1 percent. Jessica Soho's magazine show settled at No.3 with 28.3 percent rating.

SOP ruled the Sunday daytime race through its 15.4 percent rating, thanks to its 1st Music Video Awards presentation. Rival ASAP '07, meanwhile, collected a 13.9 percent rating for third place.

No one emerged as victorious in the battle of showbiz talk shows as The Buzz and Showbiz Central shared the fourth spot with both at 13.4 percent rating.

In the primetime battle, the momentum once again shifted to Bong Revilla's Kap's Amazing Stories, which generated a 29.4 percent rating to trample Paolo Bediones's Tok! Tok! Tok! Isang Milyon Pasok (26.9 percent).

Leonid Meteor Shower Peaks This Weekend

Joe Rao Skywatching Columnist
Fri Nov 16, 7:30 AM ET

This weekend brings us the return of the famous Leonid Meteor Shower, a meteor display that in recent years has brought great anticipation and excitement to skywatchers around the world.
While the Leonids have been spectacular in years past, this year a modest display is expected.

Solely from the standpoint of viewing circumstances, this will be a favorable year to look for these meteors, since the Moon will be at first quarter phase and will have set in the West long before the constellation Leo (from where the meteors get their name) has climbed high in the sky.

What they are

The Leonid meteors are debris shed into space by the Tempel-Tuttle comet, which swings through the inner solar system at intervals of 33.25 years.

With each visit the comet leaves behind a trail of dust in its wake. Lots of the comet's old dusty trails litter the mid-November part of Earth's orbit and the Earth glides through this debris zone every year. Occasionally we'll pass directly through an unusually concentrated dust trail, or filament, which can spark a meteor storm resulting in thousands of meteors per hour. That's what happened in 1999, 2001 and 2002, because Tempel-Tuttle had through the inner solar system in 1998.

But now, the comet – and its dense trails of dust – have all receded far beyond Earth's orbit and back into the outer regions of the solar system. So this year there there is little if any chance of heightened activity.

Peak activity

In the 2007 Observer's Handbook of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, meteor experts Margaret Campbell-Brown and Peter Brown indicate that this year's peak activity should occur on the night of Nov. 17-18. They cite 4:00 GMT on Nov. 18, which corresponds to 11 p.m. EST and 8 p.m. PST on the evening of Nov. 17.

This is the moment when the Earth will be passing closest to the orbit of the long-departed comet, and when our planet seemingly is most likely to encounter some residual comet material. This time is highly favorable for those in Europe and Africa. But in contrast for North American observers, Leo will still be below the horizon; they will have to wait until later in the night to catch a view of the Leonids.

But while Leonid rates are unpredictable, it is unlikely that more than about 15 meteors per hour will be seen this year.

Other meteor researchers concur that Leonid activity will be modest at best.

In the 2007 Astronomical Calendar, British meteor astronomer, Alastair McBeath also cites the night of Nov. 17-18 as the best night for Leonid viewing: "This year may see a return to more typical meteor numbers, perhaps 15+?"

McBeath gives 3:00 GMT on Nov. 18 for this year's Leonid peak and states that observing conditions "should be impressive for covering this likely maximum, especially from Europe, North Africa and the Near East."

Possible Brief Outburst over Asia?

Other meteor researchers, however, such as NASA's Peter Jenniskens, Jeremie Vaubaillon of France, Esko Lyytinen of Finland, David Asher of Ireland and Mikhail Maslov of Russia, have examined Leonid prospects for this year and also suggest watching for some meteor activity also on Nov. 18, but much later in the day.

For instance: sometime between 22:36 and 23:03 GMT, the Earth might interact with material that was shed by comet Tempel-Tuttle back in the year 1932. But even in this case, the intensity of the shower will fall far short of the memorable Leonid displays that occurred as we transitioned from the 20th to the 21st century.

"Unfortunately it isn't possible to have a 'once in a lifetime' chance every year," Asher notes.

It is possible the dusty material from 1932 will create a brief bevy of 30 to 60 Leonids per hour. But the time frame when these meteors are predicted to be most numerous only favors observers in central and eastern Asia (where it will be the early morning hours of November 19). And unfortunately, for Japan and Australia, the sun will have already risen!

How to watch
The meteors will appear to emanate from out of the so-called "Sickle" of Leo, but prospective viewers should not concentrate on that area of the sky around Leo, but rather keep their eyes moving around to different parts of the sky.

Because Leo does not start coming fully into view until the after midnight hours, that would be the best time to concentrate on looking for the Leonid meteors.

The hours after midnight are generally best for watching for "shooting stars" anyway, because before midnight we are riding on the back side of the Earth in its orbit around the sun, whereas after midnight we are on the front or advancing side. After midnight the only meteoroids escaping collision are those ahead of the Earth and moving in the same direction with velocities exceeding 18.5 miles (29.8 kilometers) per second. All others we will either overtake or meet head-on. But before midnight, when we are on the backside, the only meteoroids we encounter are those with velocities high enough to overtake the Earth.

Therefore, on the average, morning meteors appear brighter and faster than those we see in the evening.

And because the Leonids are moving along in their orbit around the sun in a direction opposite to that of Earth, they slam into our atmosphere nearly head-on, resulting in the fastest meteor velocities possible: 45 miles (72 kilometers) per second. Such speeds tend to produce bright meteors, which leave long-lasting streaks or trains in their wake.
