Sunday Primetime (7:00-11:00 p.m.)
Taking full command of the evening in viewers and young adults, ABC marked its ninth consecutive Sunday as the No. 1 network in the key Adult 18-49 sales demographic. The Net beat its nearest competition on the evening by 2.4 million viewers (10.8 million vs. 8.4 million CBS) and by 80% in Adults 18-49 (3.6/10 vs. 2.0/6 Fox). Despite airing a repeat during the opening hour of prime, ABC ranked No. 1 among Adults 18-49 in all 8 half-hours of the night.
Growing week to week among viewers and young adults, ABC turned in its strongest Sunday results in 7 weeks since 3/2/08.
For the second straight week (both weeks since its return), ABC's "Desperate Housewives" qualified as Sunday's No. 1 TV program in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, standing as the night's top-rated series on all 12 of its original telecast this season. In fact ABC delivered the Top 3 TV shows on Sunday in Adults 18-49, with "Housewives," the return of "Brothers & Sisters" and the season finale of "Oprah's Big Give," respectively.
"America's Funniest Home Videos" (7:00-8:00 p.m.)
Starting off ABC's night with a strong win, ABC's repeat airing of "America's Funniest Home Videos" beat its closest competition in the 7 o'clock hour (CBS' "60 Minutes") by 47% in Adults 18-49 (2.2/7 vs. 1.5/5).
"Oprah's Big Give" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
Building week to week in its new 8 o'clock time period, the season finale of ABC's "Oprah's Big Give" dominated the 8 o'clock hour, beating its closest competitors by 3.2 million viewers (10.0 million vs. 6.8 million CBS) and by 39% in Adults 18-49 (3.2/9 vs. 2.3/6 CBS and Fox tied).
In its season closer, "Oprah's Big Give" surged by 1.0 million viewers and by 10% in Adults 18-49 over the prior week (9.0 million and 2.9/8 on 4/13/08).
"Desperate Housewives" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Sunday's No. 1 TV show for the second straight week, ABC's "Desperate Housewives" towered over its time slot, leading its nearest competitors in the 9 o'clock hour by 7.6 million viewers (15.6 million vs. 8.0 million - CBS) and by 120% in Adults 18-49 (5.5/13 vs. 2.5/6 - Fox).
"Brothers & Sisters" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
On its first original telecast since February, ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" returned as a definitive No. 1 in the 10 o'clock hour in viewers and young adults. The ABC drama topped its closest time period competition by 2.2 million viewers (10.5 million vs. 8.3 million CBS) and by 125% in Adults 18-49 (3.6/10 vs. 1.6/4 NBC).
"Brothers & Sisters" jumped from its most recent original telecast by 2.0 million viewers and by 20% in Adults 18-49 (8.5 million & 3.0/7 on 2/17/08). In addition, the return of "Brothers & Sisters" attracted ABC's biggest series audience in the time period in more than 3 months since 1/13/08.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped from over 15% at the same point in 2006, up to nearly 24% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
