WWE One Night Stand 2008 - (RAW Main Event) WWE Championship Match

Champion stands his ground

SAN DIEGO – The term “extreme” was redefined at One Night Stand as WWE Champion Triple H took his encounter with Randy Orton to such ends, en route to retaining the coveted gold as the Last Man Standing.

In an arena-wide war with his former protégé-turned-rival, The Game ultimately turned to his time-tested ally, the sledgehammer, to ensure that the “Age of Orton” would be snuffed out with the referee’s count of 10. To add substantial injury to the title match loss, the Legend Killer also suffered a broken left collarbone after Triple H reversed an attempted RKO and hurled Orton over the top rope to the floor.

The rules of this contest required sheer brutality, as the first Superstar to incapacitate his opponent and make them unable to get to their feet by the 10-count would be the victor and WWE Champion. Though both contenders fought tirelessly beyond what many ordinary men might endure, it was Triple H who landed the winning blow to his foe’s skull with The Game’s ever-dependable sledgehammer.

This grisly Last Man Standing Match was ironically of Orton’s personal choosing and the Legend Killer’s own hubris would prove to be his downfall at One Night Stand. Eight months after the Age of Orton commenced with Randy’s Last Man Standing Match triumph over The Cerebral Assassin on a controversial night at No Mercy, the era of the Legend Killer was perhaps permanently abolished.

Triple H’s conquest, however, will not come without scars, bruises and enduring memories of this malicious night in San Diego. How quickly can The Game mend his wounds and heal before the next challenger to the WWE Title makes his intent known? Might this truly be the last The Cerebral Assassin sees of the Legend Killer?

Stay tuned to WWE programming to follow the WWE Champion as he moves closer to the event on every Superstar’s mind: WrestleMania XXV.
