Americans for the most part kept their TVs off on New Year's Eve, but the biggest number of those who did tune in were watching ABC.
The Alphabet averaged a 4.2 rating/9 share in primetime, which was good enough to beat CBS, 3.2/6, for the lead. NBC finished third with a 2.5/5, while FOX took fourth at 2.3/5. The CW managed only a 0.8/2.
ABC also led among adults 18-49 with a 2.4 rating. FOX came in second at 1.4, followed by CBS, 1.3, and NBC, 1.2. The CW earned a paltry 0.4.
Ryan Seacrest and Dick Clark
A showing of the movie "Shrek 2" drew a 3.6/7 for ABC at 8 p.m. The documentary "Saturday Night Live in the '90s" scored a 2.6/5 for NBC, narrowly beating the 2.5/5 average for "How I Met Your Mother" and "The Big Bang Theory" on CBS. FOX aired the movie "Men in Black II" and finished fourth. Repeats of "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Aliens in America" posted a 0.9/2 for The CW.
"Shrek 2" improved to 4.3/9 at 9 p.m. to keep ABC on top. CBS moved up to second with "Two and a Half Men," 4.1/8, and "Rules of Engagement," 3.1/6. "SNL in the '90s" held steady for NBC, while "Men in Black II" concluded with a 2.4/5 on FOX. The CW went with reruns of "Girlfriends" and "The Game."
At 10 p.m., the prime-time portion of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" posted a 4.8/10 for ABC. A "CSI: Miami" rerun on CBS drew a 3.6/7, and "Law & Order: SVU" came in at 2.5/5 for NBC.
