'Shrek the Halls' Delivers Holiday Cheer Wednesday
Special leads ABC to demo win; CBS takes viewer title
Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007 (USA)
Big ratings for a new Christmas special helped ABC to a demographic win Wednesday, but CBS snagged the overall crown.
For the night, CBS averaged a 7.9 rating/12 share. ABC was close behind with a 7.1/11 (the two networks were separated by only about 100,000 viewers). NBC finished third at 4.7/7, beating out FOX's 4.0/6. The CW pulled down a 2.7/4.
ABC's holiday special, "Shrek the Halls"
ABC led among adults 18-49 with a 4.5 rating, finishing a point ahead of CBS, 3.5. FOX came in third with a 2.8. NBC managed only a 2.1 but held off The CW's 1.9 in the race for fourth.
A pair of specials -- "Shrek the Halls," which premiered to a huge 11.0/17, and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," 9.4/14 -- ruled the 8 p.m. hour for ABC. NBC's "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" scored a 6.0/9. CBS' "Kid Nation" was third, topping an hour of "'Til Death," 3.6/6, on FOX. "America's Next Top Model" earned a 3.3/5 for The CW (and finished second to ABC in adults 18-49).
[Additional Info #1: Animated "Shrek the Halls" debuted on ABC with an impressive (and dominant) 21.06 million viewers and a 7.2 rating/20 share among adults 18-49 8 p.m. Comparably, I don’t not recall any holiday special on ABC ever performing this well. That led into a repeat of classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" at a first-place 18.74 million viewers and a 6.8/17 in the demo at 8:30 p.m.]
[Additional Info #2: The CW’s cherished "America’s Next Top Model" capped off the hour with 5.03 million viewers (#5) and a second-place 2.4/ 7 among adults 18-49. Anytime a CW show can rise to the No. 2 spot, it’s off to the winner’s listing!]
CBS moved in front at 9 p.m. with "Criminal Minds," 10.0/15. ABC dropped to second with "Pushing Daisies," 6.2/9. "Kitchen Nightmares," 4.3/7, came in third for FOX. NBC's "Bionic Woman" was fourth, while "Gossip Girl" scored a 2.1/3 for The CW.
At 10 p.m., CBS' "CSI: NY" scored a 9.1/15 -- which was the combined total of ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money," 5.0/8, and NBC's "Life," 4.1/7.
