The revelation of this year's semifinalists on "American Idol" lifted FOX to a ratings victory Wednesday.
FOX averaged an 11.5 rating/19 share in primetime, cruising to the win over second-place NBC, 6.6/11. CBS finished third at 4.7/8, edging ABC's 4.4/7. The CW was way back at 0.9/1.
"Idol" also powered FOX to a win among adults 18-49, as the network drew a 7.9 rating for the night. NBC finished a distant second at 2.7. ABC, 2.5, took third, followed by CBS, 2.0, and The CW, 0.6.
The naming of the "American Idol" top 24 delivered a 14.4/22 for FOX at 8 p.m. "Deal or No Deal," 7.1/11, put NBC in second. "Big Brother 9" drew a 3.8/6 for CBS, narrowly beating "Wife Swap" on ABC. The CW got a 1.1/2 from an "America's Next Top Model" clip show.
FOX held the lead at 9 p.m., but game show "The Moment of Truth" continued its ratings fade, finishing at 8.7/14. "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" scored a 6.0/9 for NBC, while ABC's "Supernanny," 5.8/9, built significantly on its lead-in. A "Criminal Minds" rerun, 5.1/8, was fourth for CBS. The CW aired a "One Tree Hill" repeat.
At 10 p.m., NBC's "Law & Order" grabbed the top spot with a 6.8/11. A "CSI: NY" rerun posted a 5.2/9 for CBS, beating the 3.8/6 for "Cashmere Mafia" on ABC.
