'WWE SmackDown!' Taps out of CW's Ring
Wrestling partners part ways after 10 years
If you're looking to get your Friday-night wrestling fix this fall, don't look on The CW.
"WWE Friday Night SmackDown!" and the CW Network has parted ways, it was announced late Thursday, Feb. 7.
Dylan 'Hornswoggle McMahon' Postl, 'WWE SmackDown!'
"After a successful decade of 'SmackDown' on both UPN and The CW, World Wrestling Entertainment and The CW have agreed to conclude our partnership," reads a statement on the WWE website. "Since CW's exclusive negotiation period ran out as of last Thursday, January 31, we have been contacted and have been in negotiations with other networks. WWE SmackDown will continue to air on The CW until the conclusion of the 2007-08 broadcast season. We are grateful to Les Moonves, Dawn Ostroff, and their entire organization for bringing WWE SmackDown to millions of viewers for so many years."
"SmackDown" started airing on UPN and continued on with The CW when The WB and UPN, owned by CBS, merged.
It's possible that the WWE will look for a new home for "SmackDown" on the USA cable network, which already has taken in "WWE Raw" or MyNetworkTV, where some affiliates aired "Smackdown" when they were UPN stations.
