Fast National ratings for Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008 (USA)
There was an upset on the field in Sunday's Super Bowl, but the TV numbers were far more predictable: Another massive ratings haul for the game, with FOX being this year's beneficiary.
FOX averaged a 36.5 rating/55 share in primetime Sunday, although those numbers will change when final ratings for the live broadcast are calculated. At the moment, Super Bowl XLII is a little ahead of last year's game, which scored a 34.6/52 for CBS in the fast nationals and went up in the final ratings.
Among the night's also-rans, CBS fared best with a 3.2/5. ABC, 2.4/4, was third, followed by NBC, 1.5/2, and The CW, 0.6/1.
In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 31.4 rating is also ahead of last year's Super Bowl (28.0 in the early numbers). ABC, 1.2, was the only other network to break the 1.0 mark. CBS and NBC each drew a 0.8, while The CW registered a barely visible 0.2.
The Super Bowl scored a 41.2/63 for FOX at 7 p.m. A CBS News special drew a 2.4/4 to take second, followed by an "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" repeat, 2.1/3, on ABC. The start of a "Biggest Loser" marathon on NBC came in fourth. The CW accomplished the rare feat of earning a zero share with "CW Now" and an "Aliens in America" rerun, which averaged 0.3/0.
FOX's coverage dipped a bit, to 39.2/58, at 8 p.m. as the game went to halftime. CBS stayed in second with "60 Minutes," 3.4/5. An "America's Funniest Home Videos" repeat on ABC posted a 2.5/4. "The Biggest Loser" ticked up to 1.5/2, while The CW stayed at the back with "Life Is Wild."
The climax of the New York Giants' 17-14 upset of the New England Patriots scored a 40.5/59 for FOX at 9 p.m. A "Shark" repeat kept CBS in second, topping the 2.0/3 for ABC's showing of "Meet the Fockers." NBC held steady at 1.5/2 with more "Biggest Loser," and The CW finished its night with a "Crowned" rerun.
At 10 p.m., the Super Bowl post-game show and a special "House" averaged 25.1/41 for FOX. CBS got a 4.2/7 from a "Cold Case" repeat. "Meet the Fockers" improved to 3.1/5 on ABC, beating the final hour of "The Biggest Loser"-thon on NBC.
